Couple bin junk food after TV chef tutorial

A BEXHILL family has swapped ready-meals for steamed greens after an appearance alongside a celebrity chef in a primetime tv show.

Aimi Robinson, 35, of Herbrand Walk, said her kitchen cupboards were filled with takeout menus and ready meals before she saw a website recruiting hapless chefs for a healthy makeover.

"To be honest I cannot cook. We eat out all the time. This seemed a once in a lifetime opportunity to change that," she said.

So Aimi and fiance Marc Veness travelled to a wharf in south-west London run by the Channel 5 show Family Food Fight with Flora, which began on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

In an industrial kitchen, tv-chef Matt Tebbutt, who also presents BBC 1's Saturday Kitchen with James Martin, schooled them in healthy cooking.

Matt said: "There are so many pressures on mums these days as they try to balance family life, work, budgets and healthy eating.

"I think the answer is to understand the ingredients you're using and keep it simple."

After a quick tutorial, Aimi and Marc were up against another family cooking the dishes for diners in a central London restaurant, who then voted for their favourite.

During filming Marc was shocked to learn his "heart age" was 47 - 11 years older than him.

Aimi, a lapdancer by trade who has performed for Simon Cowell and Hugh Heffner among others, was told her heart exactly matched her age.

"I was quite chuffed," she said. "But Marc really took it to heart."

The show and its sponsor, Flora, promote healthy values, raising awareness of the dangers of having a fatty heart.

Friday night is no longer KFC night in the Veness-Robinson household, and Aimi said Marc was enjoying his new role in the kitchen

The couple, along with son Harry, 13, travel to Cyprus in six weeks for their wedding, and say they have managed to put more savings away since they cut down on eating out.

Aimi and Marc are due to appear in episode four of the show in one month's time.

She said: "I enjoyed it a lot and Matt was lovely. But it was really hard work. I don't want to ever be a chef."
