Crawley Hazelwick students reach UK finals of science contest

A trio of Crawley students will be in the running for the prestigious title of UK Young Engineers of the Year later this month.

Krishen Mistry, Nirav Nayee and Shivam Patel, who are all Year 10 students at Hazelwick School, will be showing off their skills at the country’s biggest school science fair on March 16 to 19.

They are competing in the finals of the 2016 National Science and Engineering Competition (NSEC) at the NEC Birmingham as part of the Big Bang Fair initiative.

They qualified for the NSEC finals when their project ‘Pi-Yota’ won the Junior Engineering/Technology category at the regional heats at the 2015 Big Bang Fair South East.

They also won the Doosan Award for Teamwork and were praised by judges for their ‘enthusiasm’ and ‘entrepreneurialism’.

The team created a model which is programmed to run like a remote control car.

Its features include a camera, alarm and clock.

Teacher Emma Langham, who will be accompanying the trio at the NEC, said: “Since last summer they have been developing the Pi-Yota so that it now moves and can be controlled.

“They’re planning a few other surprises as well.

“The students are really excited about taking part in the NSEC finals – especially now that final preparations are underway.”

The National Science and Engineering Competition open to all 11 to 18-year-olds living in the UK and in full-time education.

The regional heats of the 2017 contest will take place at this year’s Big Bang South East, at the South of England Showground on June 29.
