Debut for young trumpeter at Eastergate war memorial

A young trumpeter made his debut at this year's Remembrance Sunday service in Eastergate.

Alex Barnes (14) played the Reveille, the Last Post, the national anthem and accompanied a hymn before a gathering of between 200-300 residents and dignitaries gathered around the village's war memorial.

Alex (14), of Silver Birch Drive, Middleton, was asked to take part in the important annual occasion by a mutual friend involved with the service.

A pupil of St Philip Catholic High School in Barnham, Alex was watched by his mum, Julia Barnes. "It was a very proud moment seeing him play at the service. Alex was a bit nervous at the start but he soon relaxed.

"He is a member of Littlehampton Concert Band. So, he's used to performing, though not so much on his own," she explained.

His playing impressed the service's organisers so much they immediately invited him back next year. The service was conducted by the village's vicar, the Rev Simon Holland.
