Dumping shock at Ravenside

ILLEGAL dumping and industrial waste at Ravenside Retail Park is unsightly and a safety hazard according to one Bexhill resident.

In a letter to the Observer the resident raised three concerns. They were:

1. Fly tipping of various household items

2. Children playing with discarded wooden pallets, using them as ramps for bikes

3. Lack of security staff to monitor illegal dumping and to warn children away from the delivery areas of the retail and leisure park.

"There have been many instances of fly tipping and it is a dumping ground for fridges, freezers and washing machines, smashed up microwaves, cages and trolleys," the letter stated.

But the tip-like appearance of the delivery area of the retail park was not the only issue raised in the letter.

"Wooden pallets and other materials from the premises are strewn over the roadway by school children that use them to build ramps for their bikes and skateboards."

Plans for a skatepark in Bexhill have been in the pipeline for a long time, along with strong opposition.

One group of children using pallets as ramps told an Observer reporter it was not a skate park they needed but a dirt track for their bikes.

They said the ramps at the top of Galley Hill and in Sidley were suited to skateboarders and rollerskaters, and not bike riders.

The resident continued: "In the evenings, at weekends and now during the day as it is the school holidays, it is quite intimidating to walk through there, either with my dog or with shopping. I have never seen a security guard or patrol or anyone in authority on the site to warn the children of the possible dangers of injury."
