The group’s Evie Sier said, “We need a green recovery, including massive investment in walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure here in Eastbourne.

“Eastbourne has one of the highest pollution levels in the country and that’s why Greenpeace activists have left this clear message to the government in chalk outside the town hall, by the pier, along the promenade and in Carlisle road.”

Evie said it would be ‘great’ to have a square for pedestrians outside the Town Hall and in Carlisle Road, and also have more space for bikes around the railway station.

She said, “We are also the only town in the south with no decent cycle track on our promenade. We need more space for people to walk and cycle safely - not £27 billion for new road building.

“I’d cycle more and many more people would cycle to work if it were safer, but right now I, like many other people, am too worried about the busy traffic, lack of space and air pollution in and near Eastbourne.”

Evie said cycling brings lots of benefits to the community which includes keeping people fit, reducing air pollution and lowering carbon emissions.

She said, “We want the government to invest in clean, green transport so more people can cycle, walk and take public transport safely.”
