Farm Diary by Gwyn Jones, February 23

After any dry spell comes rain- plenty of it! I do hope the water companies are taking advantage rather than spend their time on slogans such as 'the wrong sort of rain' or ' wrong time of year'. Now is surely the time to divert rivers, and not during a dry spell.

We are well ahead with maize preparations at Tillington. All the muck has been spread and sub-soiling finished, By the time you read this, we should be ploughing with our new plough. It's an old plough actually, but it's new to us. After years of faithful service we have swapped our old extremely heavy Dowdeswell plough for a much lighter variwidth plough with slatted mould-boards. This will mean we use less fuel and increase work rate.
