'Exclusion zone' plea for Worthing business

ANIMAL rights campaigners could soon be banned from protesting outside a pharmaceutical company's Worthing base.

GlaxoSmithKline, which has an office in Dominion Way, says protestors have waged a campaign of harassment and intimidation against its employees.

As a result, it has gone to London's High Court to ask for an injunction to stop the campaigning by creating exclusion zones.

Glaxo says its workers have been subjected to violent attacks on their cars and graffiti attacks on their homes.

Paul Girolami, representing the company, said that a senior member of staff had found the word "paedophile" scrawled on his home, while another was sent a letter claiming to be from the police, in which he was accused of being a rapist.

Last month, the court granted a temporary injunction.

The latest application wants this extended to create permanent exclusion zones at 18 of the company's UK sites, including Worthing.

It would restrict protests at the company's bases to once every 28 days, between 10am and 4pm, and with a maximum of 20-30 participants, depending on the site.
