Farm comes to school

Lessons in ferret walking were on the timetable at a North Bersted school.

The chance to talk one of the polecats for a stroll around the grounds of Barton Infants School delighted its youngest pupils.

They also had the chance to walk with a goat when the Cuddle Me Do farm paid at visit to the Romney Boardwalk school. The 46 four and five-year-olds revelled in the chance to get up close to the creatures. Piglets, kids, lambs, a Shetland pony, chicks, chickens and a giant tortoise went along too.

Acting headteacher Clare Birtwistle said the chance to feed and handle the animals added to the children's classwork about animals.

'The children loved it. They were absolutely enthralled by the whole experience,' she stated. 'Most of them had never been able to see the animals that close before. They were talking about the farm's visit all the next day.'
