Felpham students' award for experiencing highs and lows of fundraising

Intrepid students from Felpham Community College are being recognised with an award after skydiving and walking a total of 1,000 miles for charity.

More than 10,000 has been generated by dozens of teenagers for a range of causes including Great Ormond Street Hospital and SCOPE.

Five young school leaders who had responsibility for coordinating the school's efforts for social enterprise and volunteering will be presented with an Excellence in Charity and Community Action award. The ceremony takes place on November 5 at the 2009 Giving Nation Awards at HM Treasury.

Among the key fundraising activities was a 26-mile night walk between Bognor and Brighton which raised 3,000 for local charities. There was also a sponsored dog walk which 45 students took part in, plus a skydiving event.

Sixth former Elena Stevens and two friends dedicated their summer holiday to organising a band night in support of schools in Africa.

She praised her fellow students' efforts and said: "Winning the Giving Nation Award and the recognition that comes with it has meant a lot for the school '“ it will be lovely to be able to use the prize money to help us give more money to the causes we care so much about."

Programme director for Giving Nation Anna Reid added that the awards were a valuable platform for schools to demonstrate how much they could do for their communities.
