PARISH COUNCIL: The council meets on Monday at 7pm.

FLETCHING SINGERS: The singers meet on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

ART GROUP: The Art Group meets on Wednesday at 1pm.

MARTIAL ARTS: Kobudo Martial Arts meet on Thursday at 5pm.

FORGET-ME-NOTS: Our September meeting will be afternoon tea at Trading Boundaries on Thursday when we sit down at 3pm. For non-members willing to join us, the cost will be £7.

Dates for diary: October 20, meet in the village hall 2pm; November 17 will be our Christmas dinner, venue to be arranged.

PILTDOWN RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION: Meet the Residents day at Piltdown Golf Club on Sunday. Golf from 1pm (green fee £20pp) followed by a barbecue (£14 adult, £7 for under 12s). THE CHOIR: Have you thought of singing with a choir? The Fletching Singers (www.fletchingsingers.org.uk) meet on Tuesday evenings during term time in Fletching Village Hall from 7.45pm to 9.45pm. We are a sociable, relaxed and informal group and we put on three enjoyable concerts a year. Our choir members come from many of the surrounding villages and new members are always welcome. In the autumn term (starts September 13) we will be rehearsing two baroque Christmas Cantatas by Buxtehude and Lubeck, as well as other seasonal pieces, for a concert which we will be performing at Fletching Church on November 26. 100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 15 September 1916. Uckfield Petty Sessions. No Reins. Luther Chatfield, carter of Piltdown, was summoned for riding on a wagon without reins, at Maresfield, on September 5. Defendant pleaded guilty. PC Lusted proved the offence, saying that when he first saw defendant he was riding on the front of the wagon, which was being drawn by two horses. On seeing witness defendant got off. Fined 5s.

AUGUST RAINFALL IN PILTDOWN: August was mainly dry with a total rainfall of 45mm, well below the long-term average of 80mm. Over half the month’s rain, 26 mm, fell between 8am on Monday August 1 and 8am on Tuesday August 2. The wettest August in my records was in 2010 when I collected 144mm; the driest was in 2003 with 30mm. Total rainfall for the three summer months was 216mm, which is not much above the average of 191mm. This is attributable to a very wet June, followed by below average rainfall in July and August.
