Fun forChinese New Year

SOUTH became east as a Bognor Regis school celebrated the Chinese new year.

The 90 youngest children at Southway Primary School enjoyed all things oriental to mark the special occasion.

They had a visit from a ‘panda’ to encourage them to learn more about China and its animals, took part in a Chinese cookery workshop with their parents and staged a vibrant, noisy and colourful performance of Chinese dance and music.

Vikki Cripps, the school’s assistant principal for early years, said: “We had more than 100 parents turn up for the performance.

“Every child had a part to play. They all had a Chinese headband, which was red with Chinese symbols.”

These were provided by Arnie Brattland who had led a workshop on Chinese music and dance.

This enabled 15 of the four and five-year-olds to dance under a giant dragon and another six and a teacher become a giant lion for the performance.

The marking of the year of the snake formed part of the school’s work to celebrate different cultures.
