Goo day for Mike

Some charity fundraisers take more dedication and commitment than others.

Michael Davey must have thought so, anyway, when he was on the receiving end of repeated buckets of cold thick gooey gunge.

The manager of Sidley Coop branch, who has worked there for 25 years and is a familiar face to everyone in the area, was the willing victim in a gunge challenge which saw him covered in 16 litres of the stuff.

The first bucket came courtesy of Bexhill Town Mayor Cllr Jimmy Carroll who made his deposit with relish.

Mike, 42, who lives in Norfolk Close, raised more than £300 towards the Coop charity of the year appeal, which is Mencap, and commented: “I know an awful lot of people and I certainly do thank them - they were wonderful in all their support they have given me.

“It was great fun and a nice crowd of people turned out, including my old boss from when I first started in the store, Philip Morris and his wife Pat.”

The event was dreamed up by store supervisor Joe Selby who said he was “very pleased” with the result.

He thanked the manager of the nearby New Inn for holding a collection to add to their fundraising.

Joe said: “Jimmy Carroll was great - he bought raffle tickets and shared them out with the kids, and we had a guess-the-number-of-sweets competition as well.”

He said Mike had been the natural choice for gungee and added: “I was surprised just how many people here know him. But he’s been here since he was 16.

“We were very happy.”
