Hassocks pensioner does five paper rounds in storm

Winds might have been gusting at 70 miles per hour but the mayhem didn’t deter 71-year-old Reg Mayne from doing his paper rounds.

Reg, from Hassocks, showed true grit when he rose at first light today (Monday, October 28), determined to pick up his papers from McColl’s in Keymer Road as usual, despite leaves and branches strewn across the roads.

He rose in the dark at 5am with the wind roaring outside, set off with his papers at 6am and by 7am was well on his way to completing five paper rounds.

Reg said; “It’s been a little bit windy but not too bad. I don’t mind getting up early because I enjoy it. I’m retired now and it’s something to do and keeps me fit.

“I’ve been doing this for about a year and a half now and I think more pensioners should try it!”
