Hastings lifeboat launched to sinking vessel

Hastings RNLI's inshore lifeboat was launched at 7:41pm on Tuesday night (May 30) to reports of a vessel sinking off the St Leonards coast.

The inshore rescue boat and her volunteer crew were quickly on scene, while the all weather boat was put on standby for immediate launch to help with the rescue if necessary.

Once the inshore rescue boat had reached the vessel, it was discovered to be a 4m long vessel at anchor, which had taken on water and started to sink. There was no one on board.

The inshore rescue boat secured the vessel in an alongside tow and brought it back to beach, where the boat’s owners and Hastings Coastguard Rescue team were waiting.

Hastings RNLI’s coxswain Steve Warne said: “Fortunately, no one was on board the casualty vessel in this instance, but we could not be certain of that when we launched.

“The primary aim of the RNLI is to save lives at sea, and that is why we ask members of the public to Respect the Water and, as happened here, report anything they see of concern to the Coastguard, so that 
our volunteer crews can respond and help to keep people safe.”
