House blaze drama

A DRAMATIC house blaze was an accident say fire investigators.

Firefighters, police and the ambulance rushed to the inferno at a house in Powell Gardens, South Heighton, on Saturday.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue had received a call at 11.20pm to say a house was alight and there were people inside.

Three fire engines from Newhaven, Roedean and Seaford were sent to the scene along with a fire investigation officer.

Police and ambulance were also called.

Firefighters found the blaze was in a converted garage in which people lived.

Everyone in the building at the time had made their way out and no one living nearby needed to be evacuated.

The ambulance stayed on the scene until it was established there were no injuries.

Four breathing apparatus and three hose reels were used for almost an hour to bring the fire under control.

It was deemed safe at 12.08am but it is thought the garage was completely destroyed.

A spokesman for the fire service said: 'They got there at 11.22pm. The building was said to be "well alight".

'All persons were accounted for, no one was hurt.'

The fire service carried out an investigation into how the blaze began and said it was not suspicious but believed to have been an accident.

Police said the fire was not linked to a spate of arsons in the town earlier this year when petrol bombs were thrown into gardens and down alleyways.
