Hundreds of cyclists old and young take part in cycle ride

The sun came out as Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Katy Bourne, joined Princess Royal Hospital deputy chief nurse, Caroline Davies, and Town Mayor, Sujan Wickremaratchi, to fire the starting gun for the Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride 2016.

Mrs Bourne said: “It’s such great news that all the money this year will be going to our maternity unit at PRH.

“The team work so hard to support the community and the annual bike ride is very much a highlight of the social diary too, as everyone has such fun.”

Among the cyclists taking part were the town’s Twinned Town visitors from Traunstein and Bondue, set off on the four routes just before 9am, amidst cheers of encouragement along a bunting-filled Broadway.

All the riders had ‘chipped’ numbers, so that their time out and back was recorded, giving the speedy amongst a record of their success – as well, of course, as a special commemorative medal and choice of massage for those in need.

Helping start the event were some of the local sponsors, 1st Central, The Orchards Shopping Centre, Nuffield Hospital, Masters & Son and the Collinswood Group.

Organiser Sharon Scott, said: “It’s just amazing; not only do our local companies support us, but they field big teams of riders and helpers on the day; it’s fantastic that the whole community comes together to make a difference – and have a great day out in the meantime!

“However, our Bike Ride wouldn’t happen without the enormous amount of work and support given by all our volunteers - and in particular Steve Trice and his team at the Town Council, and our friends at Crawley Wheelers, without whom this just wouldn’t happen.

“So a great debt of thanks to them and the enormous number of people who give their time, expertise and knowledge so selflessly.”
