Learn how to stay safe at flooding roadshow

A flood warning roadshow is being held in Pagham today (Thursday, November 20) to help residents to stay safe.

The Environment Agency has joined with Arun District Council and parish councillors to stage the event. It will take place between midday and 7pm at the Beach Road Caf car park close to the seafront.

The aim is to encourage homeowners and businesses in the area to know what to do if they are flooded by taking simple steps to prepare in advance.

It will also enable people to find out if they are at risk of flooding.

Andrew Gilham, the agency's area flood risk manager, said flooding had a devastating impact on the lives of those it affected.

"As part of our ongoing flood awareness campaign, we are encouraging everyone in the Pagham area who is at risk of flooding to sign up to floodline warnings direct by calling our Floodline on 0845 988 1188.

"This system automatically alerts people to rising rivers and possible coastal flooding, giving people the vital hours they need to protect their homes and belongings."

He added: "People must be prepared for floods and know what to do if the worst happens.

"We strongly advise every household in a flood-risk area has their own plan of action that can be quickly put in place during a flood emergency."

The agency has issued three simple flooding guides that offer crucial advice.

Meanwhile, a wait-and-see approach to coastal erosion and flooding in Pagham is nearing final approval. The Environment Agency's desire for an adaptive management strategy for the low-lying seafront is gaining increased backing from councillors.

The strategy is to manage complex coastal areas by monitoring changes and acting on them in a planned and flexible way, increasing understanding over time.

Consultation on the draft strategy '“ which covers Pagham to East Head '“ was held from May to August. More than 200 residents took the opportunity to submit their views.

More than 1,000 people attended four exhibitions in Pagham, Selsey and West Wittering to view the plans, meet members of the project team and discuss the recommended management options.

Subject to acceptance by Arun and Chichester councils and the Environment Agency, government approval will be sought for the coastal management strategy.
