Littlehampton diver death victim named

A POLICE officer who died following a diving trip on Saturday (August 8) has been named.

Metropolitan policeman John Gilbert, 57, from Watford, was airlifted to Worthing Hospital by the coastguard at about 11.40am, after he and another man became unwell.

They were diving off the coast of Worthing from the Proteus, a boat operated out of Littlehampton by the Metropolitan Police diving club, when the incident happened, though the cause of Mr Gilbert's death is unclear.

A spokesman for Sussex police said: "Police are not treating the death as suspicious and a post mortem will be held to determine the cause of death."

The other man was later discharged from hospital.
