Littlehampton fire crews back National Nest Box Week

FIREFIGHTERS answered a plea for help – to provide a place for birds to nest and rest in a Littlehampton wood.

Crew members from Littlehampton fire station made the short journey to Lobs Wood, in Granville Road, on Tuesday morning, taking their ladders with them to climb trees and install nest boxes.

The conservation effort was held to tie in with National Nest Box Week, and was organised by Stella Porter, a committee member of Littlehampton in Bloom, with the help of mental health group Worthing and Arun Mind, whose members made the nest boxes.

“We were having problems finding someone who could put the boxes up for us, as people said there would be problems with health and safety and using ladders, but when we asked the firefighters, they said right away they would do it,” said Stella, who lives near the wood.

“They really took an interest in it, asking an ornithologist for advice on where to put the boxes and finding out about the kind of birds that might use them,” she added.
