Littlehampton girls give up their gadgets for cancer cause

Charlie Matheson and her friends, Emily Woodroffe, Mya Pearce-Ahdoud, Lauren Searle, Olivia Jenkins and Isabel Woods all gave up their beloved gadgets for a day, raising an impressive £300 for Angmering-based cancer support group, Cancer United.

The 12-year-olds spent the day in Charlie’s back garden, in East Street, doing everything from braiding each other’s hair and colouring, to a range of crafts.

Charlie’s mum, Sandy, was very strict about the girls not using any of their favourite piece of tech.

“The only thing electrical I allowed them was the fridge,” she said.

The idea for the fundraiser came from Charlie and Mya during their Easter holidays.

As a challenge for themselves during the April break, the duo – who attend The Littlehampton Academy with the other four girls – decided to not watch any TV for the day.

“This went really well so they thought they would try and raise some money for charity,” Sandy said.

She added: “To be totally honest, I don’t think they found the actual day that hard. They all kept themselves really busy.”

The youngsters handed over the money to Cancer United on Monday.

The organisation offers a support network for those people affected by cancer.
