Local MPs claimed almost £300,000 worth of expenses

Figures published this week showed local MPs Nick Gibb and Nick Herbert claimed almost £300,000 in expenses in a year.

The members' allowance expenditure tables for the year until March 31 last year reveal the sums claimed.

Mr Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, was paid 149,013 in allowances for that period.

MP for Arundel and the South Downs Mr Herbert's amount was 141,955.

The totals are comprised of eight sets of expenses. They include the cost of staying away from home, office running costs, postage expenses and staff costs and cover.

The maximum amount which each could have claimed for the year was more than 193,000. Both MPs also receive an annual salary of more than 60,000.

In addition, Mr Gibb claimed in excess of 9,000 in mileage costs for the year and Mr Herbert received 5,000-plus.
