The 35 year old man, from Lewes was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol when he was stopped in a road-side check at Brighton on Saturday June 1.

Inspector Carl Knapp from Sussex Police’s Road Policing Unit said: “It’s not unusual for motorists to be driving on the morning after drinking and not realise that they are still over the limit. However, a positive breath test on the very first motorist did come as a bit of surprise to the arresting officer.”

“Drink drive checks are daily business for us, but during June we will be holding more visible checks. During the summer months people often enjoy an alcoholic drink outside, in a pub garden, at a barbecue or on the beach, without thinking about the consequences if they then decide to drive. However, as this case shows, it’s not just an evening or late night problem.”

“Drink drivers kill and maim. If you suspect someone call 101 or text 65999. Alternatively, report them on the Operation Crackdown website www.operationcrackdown.org. If the offence is taking place there and then, dial 999.”
