AUTUMN GATHERING: Those who didn't go to the Gathering at the Village Hall last Sunday missed a fun time. It's nice to see folk having into a really good natter and a catch up, with most people with a cup of tea or a pint in their hands. The array of cakes was astonishing and there was a BBQ to feed an army. We do hope not too much of anything was left over. There were a few reunions too. We were particularly pleased to meet up with Ingrid and Michael Ashton again, particularly as Ingrid has very generously entrusted us with some old family photos showing Birchford Cottage '” the last of the cottages at this hamlet on the high point on the southern side of the Darwell Reservoir for us to scan for Trish's village archive. (All the cottages were demolished '” quite needlessly, as it turned out '” by Southern Water as part of the building of the Reservoir.) The Village Hall Committee deserves a big vote of thanks for all the hard work that went into laying on the event, with thanks too to all the other helpers including Steve for the music, the PCC for the tea and cakes, the Club for the bar, and Chef Whines for the BBQ. So much effort deserved a better turnout.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Club’s Snooker Challenge Cup final will this year be played on Wednesday October 5th October between Steve Smith and Alan Delahoy. The doubles tournament sees Alan and Pete Last through to the final to play the winners of the match between Steve Smith and Kevin Gray v Colin Elmes and James Streets. The Club’s team have their first home match this week against Tenterden.

In other Club news, the Club are planning a few charity events starting with the Wayne Hardy Charity Night on Saturday October 22nd.Also planned is a big break charity quiz night and a Children in Need auction of promises night on Friday November 18th. MOUNTFIELD FAMILY BONFIRE: The evenings are beginning to draw in and there is a little nip in the air of a morning so it’s time to think about the bonfire. It will be held in the usual place on the Bonfire Field on Friday October 28th. The gates will open at 6.00 pm and entry is £2.00 per head. Mountfield’s reputation for providing a family-friendly and family-safe bonfire event is well deserved so round up the family and friends.

FOR THE DIARY: Advance notice of Mountfield Horticultural Society’s Annual General Meting which will be held on Saturday November 5th at 3.00 in Mountfield Village Hall. Tea and cake for all! The Society would love more younger people in the village to get involved. and, while you’ve got the diary out, the 2017 Flower Show will be on Saturday July 29th — for those who know (and show) their onions.

SW CONSTRUCTION: Everything seems fairly quiet on the construction front. Jim and Peter, on behalf of the Parish Council, were invited to a liaison meeting this week. All the planning seems to be working — school bus, rubbish/recycling collections, access for emergency services, etc — but we will report next week on anything from the meeting.

SONIA BARNES: Sonia, who lives at the Lodge opposite the end of Solomon’ Lane, and has been a familiar face to so many of us for so many years in the reception at Martin’s Oak Surgery has now retired from there. We wish her all the best for the future.

AND A SPECIAL THOUGHT: Everyone in the village will want to wish all the very best to Micky Gray who has been in the wars a bit recently.

FINALLY: What a year for toads! Almost every morning brings fresh carnage on our part of Kent Lane. Though it has to be said that we don’t mind as they can inflict grievous suffering on any dog unwise enough to tangle with one of the blighters.
