Museum walks to remember World War Two

BEXHILL Museum is inviting people to join them on an historic jaunt as they repeat a series of walks to commemorate the events of the Second World War.

The series of walks, called 'Stepping Out to Bexhill in World War 2', takes strollers through different parts of the town which use collected memories of residents to bring those events to life seventy years on.

The first walk, which takes place on Sunday 11th July, is through East Bexhill.

It tells of the impressive defences which were erected to protect the shore from sea- born invasion, one of which is recorded memorably by comedian Spike Milligan, who was stationed here.

Walkers will also hear stories of how the lives of those people, who were not evacuated, were affected by the war.

After Dunkirk, Bexhill was effectively on the front line in the defence of Britain and saw plenty of enemy action.

Later, in the build up to D.Day, Churchill together with several Commonwealth leaders saw the need to visit the many troops based in Bexhill, and various small boys were surprised to see these important men walking down the road.

The first walk starts at the War Memorial, Marina, at 2pm.

The 2.5 mile walk takes approximately 2.5 hours, and there is a charge of 2.50 for museum funds.

Unfortunately Museum walks are not suitable for dogs.
