New chapter for Littlehampton Academy’s dedicated duo

IT’S been a whirlwind of a time for two of Littlehampton’s longest-serving teachers who retired after almost half a century of combined teaching experience.

As The Littlehampton Academy prepares to begin another chapter in its history, with the opening of its new buildings, teachers Des McDonald and Jacque Sherred are also readying themselves for a fresh start.

Des, who has been with the school almost 25 years, was the head of English, and said that he is going to miss all the staff and students at the school.

He said: “It’s been a fascinating experience that I’ll always treasure.

“It’s one that’s been very enjoyable and rewarding. It’s been nice to watch kids grow up. There are four members of staff here I used to teach, which I always find amusing.”

Des started teaching in Hove before moving to a school near Lewes and then later the Littlehampton Community School.

Jacque, who was a special needs co-ordinator and had been with the school for 20 years, said the academy will always remain close to her heart.

“My time here has been fantastic. I didn’t expect to spend 20 years here, but it’s the sort of school that gets you, there is something about it – there always has been.

“It’s hard to define, I think it’s the community aspect and combination of the students and staff.”

Jacque began her career in London, in 1975. She moved to Worthing and taught at Northbrook College for six years before taking up a place at Littlehampton.

Academy principal, Steve Jewell, said: “We are grateful to Jacque and Des for their many years of loyal hard work supporting young people in our community and wish them well.”
