Nus fields questions from schoolchildren

She said: “I had a wonderful time meeting head teacher Mrs Jane Cook and all those lively, well-informed children. They posed some interesting questions to me and kept my on my toes. Well done the school for instilling such an excellent curiosity about the world of politics.”

Youngsters asked Nus how she became an MP and how many votes she needed to win. They were curious to find out what she plans do for her Wealden constituency next. A subject that aroused interest was Nus’s concern about slow internet access in country areas and they also asked whether she had any plans to make some more money available to the school.

While in the village she also met representatives of the committee supervising the revamp of the village hall. She was told the £65,000 project is creating new storage space. Formerly changing rooms were used to store furniture and equipment owned by organisations that use it for events.

A storeroom will become an outside toilet so the school can use the recreation ground for sports. The project is on time for completion in March. Work so far has seen pathways and drainage laid while the roof and outside is complete including attractive oak lapboard walls. Volunteers are putting in some inside walls and creating a mezzanine floor. Money comes from a grant of £36,754 from The Veolia Environmental Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund and £10,000 from the village hall’s reserves. The community has also contributed £10,000. Nus said: “Facilities such as the hall are the physical embodiment of community life, especially in rural areas. I look forward to seeing the fantastic work that is being done especially by volunteers who give up their time.”
