Something worth celebrating

RYE is rightly proud of its diverse festivals. They attract visitors to the town as well as providing an opportunity for the local community to come together and celebrate.

Only a few weeks ago we looked as if we had lost one of those festivals with news that the Rye Maritime Festival would not be happening in August this year due to a funding short-fall.

The response from the town was predictably proactive with groups and bodies in Rye coming together to provide financial aid and help with printing leaflets and promoting the festival.

It was the same Rye spirit that prevented the much loved Lion Street community building from being sold off to developers as luxury flats.

The festival being saved coincides with news that this year’s Rye Jazz Festival is set to be even bigger than last year’s event with a colourful New Orleans style street parade.

It could not come at a better time with a delegation travelling to London this week to put the case forward for the area being named City of Culture.

Rye has a long and proud nautical heritage and it is right this is recognised and celebrated with a festival that is free for all to attend.

Make a date in your diary for August 11 and come down to Strand Quay to get behind the event.
