LETTER: We must do all we can to protect them

We were saddened though not surprised to read that only 13.5 per cent of people see hedgehogs on a regular basis in their East Sussex gardens (Express, June 17).

We have known for a number of years now that hedgehogs are in decline in the UK and so we joined forces with People’s Trust for Endangered Species to deliver the ‘Hedgehog Street’ project.

Hedgehog Street is designed to help combat the decline by getting people to help hedgehogs, doing really simple small things that can have a big impact. So far more than 38,000 people have signed up to be a ‘Hedgehog Champion’ at www.hedgehogstreet.org

Hedgehogs have been roaming the earth for around 15 million years. We need to do all we can to ensure they are a common sight for many more years to come.
