Burgess Hill Martlets WI go west

It doesn’t take much encouragement for members of Burgess Hill Martlets WI to let their hair down or in this case put their Stetsons on.

At their last meeting more than 50 members listened to Anne Chance telling them about her adventures cattle driving in Montana and Oklahoma.

Anne, seen third from the left in the photograph was an entertaining and amusing speaker and it soon became apparent why her talk was entitled ‘Saddle Sore in Montana’.

As Anne explained, films about the American West do not capture the noise, dust or sheer exhaustion after nearly ten hours in the saddle.

Anne had wanted to participate in an American cattle drive from the age of eight but the opportunity did not arise until she was in her early sixties and even then she had to learn to ride in England before venturing on her first cattle drive at 64.

Anne also judged the WI’s competition for the best dressed cowboy and the winner was Diane Rabson, at the front of the picture in the white hat.

At their next meeting, in July, Burgess Hill Martlets WI will be hearing about gardening for bees although sadly there is no competition or the best dressed bumble bee!
