County council denies "burying" Arundel bypass

I WRITE in reference to Paul Dendle's letter (Gazette, March 11), regarding the West Sussex Coast DaSTS (Delivering a Sustainable Transport System) study and his claim that the county council is "in a process of burying the Arundel bypass to history".

The purpose of the study is to develop options for transport which help economic growth and regeneration of the area, and to inform decision-making on future investment in the south east.

A number of options are currently being considered, and reports are still at a draft stage while comments are received from stakeholders, but a full Arundel bypass IS one of the schemes being considered.

The DaSTS study is one of a nationally-funded programme of studies and is being led by the South East England Partnership Board. Together with the board, the Highways Agency, Network Rail, West Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council are working on this study, which considers the area from Chichester in the west to Brighton and Hove in the east –including Arundel, Worthing and Lancing.

The regional transport board will meet in June to consider the findings of the study, which will fully incorporate local input. The county council has been successful in getting the whole timetable for the local public consultation and input extended by a further two months to June.
