Discussion brings back memories...

THE current discussion about the suggested traffic lights and access to the ASDA development at Ferring reminds me of a well-attended public meeting arranged by Ferring Parish Council some 20 years ago.

This meeting was part of a public protest against West Sussex County Council’s intention to ban right turns into Langbury Lane by eastbound traffic on the A259.

The county council’s argument was on safety grounds, and the fact that such a turn (with traffic lights) would slow down traffic along the main road!

The parish council and residents gave very good reasons for allowing such a turn, but these were ignored and so now motorists trying to reach central Ferring have to continue for almost a mile to the Goring Crossways roundabout. They then have a choice of returning for another mile along the westbound carriageway of the A259, or of turning down past Goring railway station and then taking Goring Way back to Ferring – an extra two miles in total!

If the ASDA proposal is allowed, will the county council then re-time the traffic lights at Langbury Lane and allow the former logical right turn?
