Let’s all plot for this allotment

I read your report (Gazette, November 29) about Maltravers Park with great interest. I think the idea of a community allotment is brilliant, but I can understand why residents have some reservations.

I think Arun District Council has come forward with a very good idea, but has not dealt with the proposal properly. It needs to have a proper consultation with all concerned bodies. It needs to have a solid plan, and also to try to persuade Mind to come back on board.

It is obvious that cutbacks have to be made, but if those grass tennis courts are maintained, only a few people will benefit. However, if they are turned into a community allotment, many will benefit.

Those people in our community who are vulnerable and often marginalised will enjoy the benefits of better health, exercise and good food – good for the over-stretched NHS.

We, the more fortunate people, can offer expertise and maybe even buy some home-grown vegetables.

Any profits can then be put back into the allotment to keep it viable.

This is the season of goodwill, and the Littlehampton community is good at helping and supporting people who are less fortunate.

Let’s try to get this community allotment going and remember, Dig for Littlehampton.
