Rotarians raise Philippine funds

Cranleigh Rotarians have been out in force in the village, collecting for the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines. Their efforts have raised over £7,000 towards ShelterBoxes, with an extra sum anticipated from Gift Aid.
ShelterBox is maximising its personnel and aid in the Philippines to help displaced families after Typhoon Haiyan leaves devastation in its wake.

Following last months earthquake and Fridays Typhoon Haiyan, ShelterBox has already deployed all its aid pre-positioned at the former US air base at Clark on Luzon island.

With more response teams arriving in the coming days, ShelterBox is now assessing the need to call on other stock held at Dubai, at Subang near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Melbourne in Australia and at its Cornwall HQ in Helston.

Rotary International and the UK ShelterBox organisation have been in partnership for many years, with Rotary clubs around the world providing funds that go towards replenishing the supply of ShelterBoxes. These remarkably compact containers typically include a tent, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive after a disaster. They can be sent at short notice wherever they are needed.

ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.

When the worst storm ever to make landfall in recorded history struck the Philippines on 8 November, ShelterBox was already in the country, providing aid to families who had lost homes in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck in September.

“The Rotary Club of Cranleigh has always sought to support ShelterBox in its efforts to assist disaster-struck areas,“ said David Gill, President of the Cranleigh club. “Thanks to the remarkable generosity of the people of Cranleigh, we have been able to send enough funds for 12 ShelterBoxes that can be used in the Philippines.“
