Tax rise needed?

ON Monday, I received my council tax demand from Arun District Council, by post.

The same day, a lady knocks at my door, asking if I will help in a MORI poll. I agree, and one of the questions was: “Do you feel that Mr Cameron and the banks are doing enough for this country?”

I answered the question and, having just received my council tax bill, thought I would equate it to my local council for Littlehampton, noticing that the town council tax had increased by some 1.9 per cent per annum. Why?

Salaries have not increased, and we already have the highest council tax, by far, in the whole of Arun district.

There are many low-income families, people not so young, and others less abled – will this be the straw that breaks the camel’s back?

The figure of 1.9 per cent is not massive, but to some could make a great difference to their finances.

I ask councillors, of all parties, to pause for a moment to think – could we carry on the duties of the council without this rise?
