Our Parliament should decide

Remaining in or leaving the EU is a much more serious issue. The decision must therefore be taken by elected MPs; this must then be ratified by the House of Lords.

A referendum is merely a survey: an expensive opinion poll which has no legal standing. The result of the recent referendum was heavily influenced by UKIP and the right wing press. It is high time Parliament took control again.

A second referendum would probably deliver a very significant majority for the Remain group as the effects of the first referendum are beginning to be felt. The pound has collapsed and the Bank of England is spending vast amounts of taxpayers’ money to prop it up. Interest rates are about to come down – which will penalise many pensioners who rely on interest from their savings to make ends meet.

Several large banks and companies (Nissan, for example) have clearly indicated in the quality press that they would relocate on the continent if the UK became cut off from the EU.

Yet a second referendum would be a mistake. It would only create more uncertainty and bitter division: the Brexiters would not accept it.

What we need is a calm and balanced debate, followed by a vote, in the Commons and the House of Lords.

We want our Parliamentary Democracy back.
