Remembering the days of Colwell Radio, the station for the old St Francis Hospital in Haywards Heath

I was interested to see on a recent ‘Nostalgia’ page in the Middy (January 24) a photograph of participants in Haywards Heath Bike Ride in the 1980s who were wearing ‘Colwell Radio’ tee-shirts.

Colwell Radio was the radio station for the old St Francis Hospital in Haywards Heath. It merged with Cuckfield Hospital Radio in the 1990s when the two hospitals closed and were replaced by the Princess Royal Hospital to form Mid-Downs Hospital Radio.

This means that, together with its predecessors, Mid-Downs Radio has been supporting the Mid-Sussex community for over 40 years.

Mid-Downs Radio is a registered charity entirely run by volunteers who raise the funds necessary for the radio station to operate. It continues to provide entertainment and information 24 hours a day to the patients, staff and visitors to the Princess Royal Hospital as well as to listeners in the community via its 1350am and Internet streaming services.

In 2018 the hospital had over 1 million attendances and MDR had over 10,500 listeners on its internet streaming services alone.

Mid-Downs Radio would like to thank the Mid-Sussex community for its continued support and would welcome any further supporters and sponsors who like to support this well established and much respected charity.

Further details can be found on the Mid-Downs Radio website.
