We need a comprehensive health service

I cannot see how increasing competition will not mean poorer healthcare and am glad the government seems to be backpedalling a little on this.

It would appear competition causes providers to lower prices to win contracts and that the quality of privatised services will be further reduced by profit creamed off.

There have, it seems, already been cases – for example, with knees – where private operations have needed to be corrected by the NHS at greater cost than if it had treated the patient from the start.

I am not convinced the present Bill will not lead to private companies cherrypicking work seemingly straightforward and profitable, and leaving the NHS less funds to pay for complicated operations.

Please will the final Bill give the government a duty to actually provide a comprehensive health service, not just to promote one in some way.
