Fairfield FC has committed to jointly run the 2,200 mile distance to support four causes in need of vital funds: Burgess Hill Youth, Burgess Hill Community Foodbank, St Peter and St James Hospice and Burgess Hill District Lions Club.

A spokesman for the football club said: “The Covid-19 crisis is hitting every corner of our community, and there are a number of organisations and charities that continue to work tirelessly to support the most vulnerable.

“The club recognises that not only are the families these organisations support in extra need in the wake of Covid-19, but with so many fund raising events currently cancelled these charities are struggling to raise much needed funds.

“We have set ourselves a £2,200 target, equating at a pound per mile run and as a result help support many people in our local community.”

The group is aiming to run a stage of the Tour de France every four days.

Members are currently on stage 11 of 21, and have travelled 1128 miles out of the 2200 length of the tour.

They hope each group will receive at least £500 ‘to help them continue to provide their vital services for our local community at this troublesome time’.
