Labour MP unveils South Downs National Park plaque in Ditchling

The Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP unveiled a plaque in Ditchling to celebrate the tenth anniversary of signing the order that confirmed South Downs National Park.

The South Downs Network held a celebration in the village on Monday (February 10), where the Labour MP signed the South Downs National Park Confirmation Order in 2009.

The plaque was installed on the wall of the Nutmeg Tree Café.

Tony Whitbread, chairman of the South Downs Network, said: “We’re very grateful that Hilary Benn has found the time to visit Ditchling to unveil the plaque, commemorating this historic moment.

“It was a hard fought battle to achieve this status but one that had overwhelming public support.

“Many people were involved with the process and the achievement of the National Park is a tremendous legacy to all their hard work and vision.

“The National Park has made a real difference in the short time it has been in existence and while there is much to do, there is plenty to look forward to in the future.”

Mr Benn had been due to attend the tenth anniversary celebration of the signing in November last year but had to pull out because of the General Election.

The South Downs Network is a network of community, conservation and environmental organisations with a particular passion for the South Downs.

It was set up when the South Downs Campaign was disbanded after the Campaign achieved its purpose of getting the South Downs made into a National Park.
