Pevensey and Pevensey Bay

INFORMATION DAY: is being held on April 23rd in Pevensey Bay at both St Wilfrids and the Baptist Church Hall. The reason for the two venues is there are literally 45 or more groups attending, Go along and find opportunities to volunteer or groups you can join. CLEAN UP FOR THE QUEEN: March has started and the date is getting nearer for Pevensey Bays own clean up for the Queens 90th Birthday. Get down to the Sea Road Car Park this Saturday, 5th starting at 11am and you can do you part in making the village an even more of a cleaner place to live. To take part all you need is a pair of gardening gloves and give a call to Pevensey Parish Clerk on 01323 743900 to let him know you are coming.

BYGONE ROYAL VISITS: Pevensey has had more Royal Visitors than William I. After the death of Henry VIII his Physician, an Andrew Borde was appointed the Companion and Physician of the young Edward VI. Andrew owned the Mint House at the time and the young King stayed there with him at times. Andrew Borde was an ex Carthusian Monk who slept with his shroud at the bottom of his bed and only drank water but was quite involved with Thomas Cromwells machinations during the Reformation, travelling abroad ascertaining reactions to the Kings policies. The young Edward was a sickly child who only lived to the age of fifteen but its fascinating to think one of the Tudors must have wandered down the High Street and walked round the Castle and sat in St Nicolas Church.

PEVENSEY CASTLE: You may have seen the ‘Tank Track’ laid over the path in the Castle. This is to facilitate the vehicles which will be needed for the project to repair and maintain the North Tower. English Heritage say there will not be much disruption for users of the Castle but take care as the tracks seems to be quite slippy in the wet.
