Plans to upgrade West Marden water treatment works

The company wants to carry out changes to its West Marden site as part of a major refurbishment and upgrade to meet new requirements regarding discharge consents set out by the Environment Agency.

It plans to build and update machinery and equipment and install two walk-in kiosks at the works site, which currently processes waste water for 364 homes in the villages of Compton and West Marden.

The works also include constructing a new, temporary access road from the B2146 to allow construction traffic to access the construction area adjacent to the treatment works site.

In plans submitted to West Sussex County Council Southern Water said the current access road was not suitable because it was too narrow.

Residents’ vehicles could also hinder access to the site because they were often parked in the road and a traffic hazard would be created by delivery vehicles passing the excavation works immediately inside the site entrance.

It said the temporary road would also help residents in Nore Down Way inconvenienced by construction and delivery vehicles. Southern Water said the new kiosks were of a ‘modest’ size and the development would not have a dominating presence on the landscape or have a significant visual impact.

Once completed, the temporary road and contractors’ compound would be removed and the land returned to its original state.
