Deadline looms for nominating candidates in Ardingly and Balcombe by-election

Mid Sussex District Council has called a by-election for the Ardingly and Balcombe ward following the death of councillor Andrew MacNaughton last month.

The by-election will take place on Thursday (July 8) and concerns all registered electors in the Ardingly and Balcombe ward.

Residents living in other Mid Sussex areas are not eligible to vote.

Residents have until 4pm on Friday (June 11) to submit nominations for candidates.

Information about being a councillor is available at www.midsussex.gov.uk and people can find additional guidance about being an election candidate at www.electoralcommission.org.uk.

The deadline for new voter registration applications is Tuesday (June 22) and the deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday (June 23).

Recent home movers are advised to check that they have updated their details on the electoral register and will be eligible to vote.

Councillor Andrew MacNaughton died on Friday (May 7).

He was the Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning and represented residents in the Ardingly and Balcombe ward for 34 years.

Mid Sussex District Council flew their flag at half-mast to mark his long period of public service and there will be a minute’s silence at the next Full Council meeting on June 30.
