Further planning consents for Bersted Tesco

The retailing giant submitted five applications to Arun District Council to enable a Tesco Express convenience store to be created on the site of the former Rising Sun public house.

A meeting of the council’s development and control committee, saw councillors allow permission for the works.

The company has no need to seek permission from the district council to build the store.

Cllr Simon McDougall (Lib Dem Bersted) said: “On principle I will vote against every single one of these applications.

“I have in the past in this chamber made my feelings about the new store very clear.”

The company sought permission to allow the putting up of a canopy, the installation of a chiller and freezer, the building of a single story extension to the back of the site which would house new staff toilets, and the installation of bollards around a cash machine.

The supermarket was also given approval to put up a new illuminated advertising sign.

Some committee members expressed concerns about the brightness of this sign and possible disruption to neighbouring residents it may cause.

Tesco’s planning agent, Gemma Brickwood of CgMs, said: “Tesco sees this new store as an opportunity to provide a local amenity to the local community.

“The new store will create around 25 new jobs for the local area and the company is seeking to fill these vacancies by using the local job centre.”
