Praise for Friary Gardens project

A few hours gardening followed by a hot dog or hamburger - the perfect way to enjoy warm spring weather this week.

Facility users of 73a Centre in London Road did just that when they were joined by friends from the Parchment Trust in Hastings who came over to repair the polytunnel they put in three years ago.

Andrew Voyce who is in charge of the garden commented: "The seagulls had pecked holes in the it, and there was other damage. These things do need renewing after a certain time, so we were glad to have it done. It has also been done in thicker material and it is slightly more opague. Lots of people were interested in what was going on, and it was a good day. The Friary Gardens people did a good job in recovering the polytunnel. And now we are looking forward to growing lots of stuff in there.

"We had a barbecue afterwards - it was great. We had hamburgers and hot dogs in rolls made by Maryilyn our cook."

Support worker Kevin Beck who accompanied the group from Parchment Trust said: "The guys here use the polytunnel to grow plants and vegetables in. We try to help other groups in the community to do gardening work."
