Primary Schools improve results

PRIMARY schools in East Sussex have again improved their results in the annual Key Stage 2 performance tables.

The tables for 2002, published yesterday, give information about pupils' performance in statutory tests taken in their last term in primary schools.

The percentage of pupils in East Sussex maintained schools reaching level 4 or above in English has increased by 0.5 per cent to 74 per cent while the percentage in Maths has increased by 3.4 per cent to 71.6 per cent.

Nationally, there has been no change in the percentage of pupils at all schools reaching Level 4 or above in English, while the percentage in Maths increased by two per cent.

Cllr Rupert Simmons, lead cabinet member for education, said: "One of our key priorities is to help improve standards in the classroom. Our primary schools have once again improved their results because of the hard work of our teaching staff and children.

"I would like to thank all our schools and especially those that have shown the greatest improvement."
