Pupils explore space and discover the '˜wow' factor

YEAR seven students at Bexhill High went back into the Space Age with a special Discoveries '˜Wow' Day.

Pupils and staff involved in SpaceLab 2011 have been studying the subject of space, going on a space mission and exploring the galaxy for new planets to colonise.

They have been working with environmental journalist Chantal Cooke, visual artist Kenton Lowe and product designer Ivo Rousham; the project was funded by Creative Partnerships.

The theatre was transformed into a space-age laboratory showing live experiments and installations, student-produced films and visitors could interact with the mission computer. The Heart Space was full of displays and activities from each of the learning pods.

In the five weeks leading up to this event students designed and screen-printed logos onto spacesuits (overalls), grew seeds in different environments, designed, tested and modified land-yachts (moon buggies), and made films and radio- reports about their discoveries. They were learning about maths, science and technology in a totally integrated project.
