'˜Radical plans' for Bexhill's regeneration with £10K grant

The Bexhill Coastal Community Team has come with a number of practical ways to drive growth, jobs and prosperity with a £10,000 grant from Whitehall.

Steps include improving the town centre’s appearance and encouraging sustainable transport as part of the Great British Coast project.

The team is made up of a number of organisations including Bexhill Forward, who produced the plan.

“This is an important step for Bexhill because the plans are community led and are not imposed from above,” a Bexhill Forward spokesman said.

“The Coastal Community Team has drawn together the Chamber of Commerce, 1066 Federation of Small Businesses, Bexhill Lions Club, the Townswomen’s Guild, local businesses, Rother Voluntary Action, Rother District Council, Bexhill Wheelers and the MP in a commitment to improve employment opportunities and increase the prosperity of Bexhill Town Centre.

The plan begins with the community-led Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair at the De La Warr Pavilion on Friday, April 29, which should get more people into employment.

Rother District Council’s Bexhill Town Centre Steering Group will also be backed to bring the area up to scratch.

The team will be working with the Wheelers and Bexhill Rail Action Group to encourage commuting and using trains instead of driving.

Other elements include implementing the town centre strategy action points and supporting the new creative skills training facility from DV8.

According to the group, this plan will help make Bexhill a ‘destination to live and work in years to come’.

Communities and local government secretary Greg Clark said Bexhill’s work is ‘proof coastal communities are ready for an economic lift off’.

“Our Great British Coast has enormous economic potential and we are determined to see it thrive all year round – not just in the summer months,” he said.

“The huge number of plans submitted, demonstrate the wave of optimism, and wealth of creative and practical ideas to boost economic lift-off. 

“I now want to see their hard work and enthusiasm come to fruition by helping to deliver their ideas through the Coastal Community teams.”
