Rain does not dampen Hollington fun day

Stormtroopers, jugglers and ponies were among those who braved the wet weather to take part in the Greater Hollington fun day.

The future of the annual event looked in doubt after organising group the Greater Hollington Partnership (GHP) closed last year.

But, spurred on by the warm reaction at previous fun days, the team decided not to let the end of the GHP spoil the event.

And, despite a very wet start, residents came out in force to support the weekend.

Hollington United Football Ground was the setting for a host of stalls and rides including a climbing wall, face painting, trampolines, Punch and Judy shows, balloon modelling, circus skills, a space ball and pony rides.

There were also stands showcasing the work of a number of local community groups.

The day ended with a free prize draw for residents who had filled in a quality of life survey '“ with the prizes sponsored by the new Asda store set to open in November.

And, as if that wasn't enough, the event closed with a fly over from the Red Arrows.

Former manager of the partnership and event organiser, Tracy Martin, said: "Since 2001 we have held this event annually for the local community.

"Even though the GHP project came to an end in 2009 we felt it was important to continue this free event for the community.

"We would like to thank Asda for its support and donations and all the community groups who held information and/or fundraising stalls at the event and of course the volunteers who helped make a gloomy day a great success."
