Record number ready to roll for Battle marbles

Once again it is anticipated the competition for the best dressed teams will be hard-fought as outfits are currently being made in secret locations throughout the town.

The medals and trophies are lined up ready to be presented to the victorious teams at the end of more than 20 matches on the Abbey Green.

Children wishing to register for the Easter Bonnet Parade, and free Easter egg, should get in touch with Tamzin Gray by Friday next week at the very latest.

There is no entry fee but registration is essential.

One thousand marbles are stored ready for the great Battle Scramble after the Easter Bonnet Parade.

There will also be candy floss, face painting and Easter balloon creations, as well as melodic music from Ricky Adelaide and a barbecue courtesy of Battel Bonfire Boyes.

The exact origin of Battle’s Marbles Matches is lost, but is believed have started in the early 1900s.

The tradition was revived in 1948 when some of the players still wore a traditional Sussex smock. Ladies were first allowed to play in 1972.

The matches will take place between 10am-noon, the parade at 11.30am and scramble at 11.45am.
