Relax, the fireman's pole is here to stay

WORTHING can rest assured that another of its traditions won't be pole-axed to become just another page in the nostalgia book.

There are no plans to scrap the firemen's pole at the brigade's station in Ardsheal Road '” fire and rescue personnel will still be sliding down the (non-greasy) stainless steel tube to gain that vital few seconds when responding to emergency calls.

Fears of the pole's demise were sparked by reports of Plymouth's new 2.4million fire services headquarters being built sans poteau on health and safety grounds.

Instead, the city's 64 firefighters have to run down three flights of stairs to get to the engines for an emergency call-out.
